Asking For and Showing Attention.

When you want to inform something to someone, such as giving information, explanation or telling a story, you need to attract your listeners’ attention.  You can do that by asking questions.  As the listener, you also have to show your attention to the speaker. Paying attention also a sign of respect.

Here I’ll share some expression asking for and showing attention.

Asking for attention

• Can I have your attention, please?
• Excuse me, I wonder if I could trouble you ….
• May I have your attention, please?
• Sorry to trouble/bother you.
• Look at me!
• Hey, Look what I’ve got here.
• Attention, please!
• Excuse me!

Showing attention

• That’s alright
• I see. – Tell me more about it.
• Oh, yes. – Really?
• Oh, my God! What happens next?
• A ha… – And then what?
• How interesting! – What’s next?
• I know what you mean. – Is that all?
• Well, well, well… – Oh, no!

Teacher : Hello class, Can I have your attention, please?

Students: Yes, sir

Teacher : Please watch the video, and then complete your worksheet

Students: That’s alright, Mom.
